News...but not what you know

Once viewed as an unconventional "hippie" alternative to dealing with blood flow, menstrual pants are now becoming more mainstream—especially among environmentally conscious people.

More and more brands are offering these types of clothing in various shapes, sizes and designs.

You can even buy sexy thongs that can absorb any menstrual fluid.

However, if you have never used them before, you may wonder how effective they are in practice.

After all, leakage is not a risk that many of us want to take.

If you are considering a conversion, here is everything you need to know.

Convenience, cost and environmental certification-these are three reasons why you might want to switch from tampons and pads to menstrual underwear.

Tampons and sanitary napkins are disposable products and therefore generate waste. Getting rid of them can also cause a lot of trouble and cause problems. Ever wanted to rinse tampons? Doing so may clog your pipeline and cause you to have major problems on the production line.

Swap tampons and sanitary napkins for reusable, more sustainable options, such as menstrual cups and menstrual pants, to avoid waste and potential waterway blockage problems.

In addition, because menstrual pants can be washed and re-weared repeatedly like ordinary underwear, you can ultimately save a lot of cash instead of buying menstrual products every month.

Evie Plumb, an ACET-qualified sex educator who works at the menstrual company FLO, told us that menstrual pants were ultimately "designed to be worn like ordinary underwear."

the difference? She called it the "magic gusset".

"The gusset consists of three protective layers: a wicking layer, an absorbent layer and a bottom cotton layer (ours are made of BCI cotton)," she said.

"The wicking layer draws your blood into the absorbent layer, keeping you dry throughout the day, while the bottom layer holds it all in place."

Evie said: "Most people use one pair during the day and one pair at night, but it all depends on your menstrual flow.

"If you use more than 5 tampons per day, we recommend that you double and use your pants and organic tampons or sanitary napkins."

In terms of buying a pair of new shoes together, each pair can last up to two years-but depending on your usage, it can last longer.

According to Evie's experience, this may be a problem that people are very concerned about.

She said: "The best way to maintain menstrual pants is to rinse them with cold water in the sink.

'After that, you can wash them by hand with detergent (this will make them last longer) or wash them in mild cold water (30°) in the washing machine.

"They can be washed with your other clothes, so you don't need to put them on separate clothes, but don't dry them or use fabric softeners."

Just like tampons and sanitary napkins, they have varying degrees of absorbency.

FLO can hold 5 tampons (45 ml), so if you are particularly heavy, they recommend double the product, for example, also use tampons.

'People often ask what is going on with blood clots on menstrual pants. We say that if you have strange blood clots on days with heavier weight (please see a doctor if this happens frequently), these should not be soiled by the top layer of menstrual pants. Just wipe it with a paper towel and continue your day," Evie said.

There are concerns that these products actually pose health risks for those who do not have access to water and cleaning equipment.

Evie said that for people in this situation, disposable products can best reduce the risk of infection.
